Reindeer Antiques Ltd

This month we have chosen to highlight some beautifully carved pieces of Regency furniture.

The pair of tea tables are veneered in the finest Cuban mahogany and the quality of the carving suggests an accomplished maker such as William Trotter of Edinburgh.

The cheval mirror is a lovely small scale example which will fit in any bedroom. It is the first example I have seen with carved pineapple finials.

We have just updated our website with a variety of new acquisitions and can be viewed at www.reindeerantiques.co.uk.

Height: 28.5"

Depth: 17.5"

Width: 36"

The beautifully figured fold-over top opening to reveal a mahogany interior above a frieze centred by a coin moulded counter sunk panel veneered in flame Cuban mahogany and flanked by scrolling honeysuckle flowers above a carved stem of architectural form which terminates in a shaped quadroform base raised on swept carved legs terminating in their original castors.

These tea tables are of the finest quality for their period. They are constructed from the best Cuban mahogany and the crispness of the carving shows they were executed by a highly accomplished craftsman.

These tables were sourced in the North East of England and their design has many similarities to the work of William Trotter of Edinburgh. Trotter was the leading cabinet-maker in Regency Edinburgh, just as the New Town was being developed, and had premises on highly fahionable Princes Street. The choice of timber, coin mouldings and crisp Neo-classical carving is typical of Trotter's work.
